| We do a full production every year. The play is usually based on a real life drama that features a happy ending with a lot of comedic slap-stick humor in between. Half-way through (prior to intermission) we feature the children singing a couple of Christmas carols and re-enact the manger scene.
One year we actually rented a camel, a donkey, and a couple of other "biblical" animals from a local petting zoo where the owner simply brought the animals down the aisles, across the front row and right back out of the door. We had people in costumes riding on the animals and attempted to dramatize it the way that it might have really happened. We did all of this while the children were singing and we ran two snow machines from the balcony. For that 5-10 minute period, the sanctuary looked like a winter wonderland!
But as far as the theme of the play itself, each time we do it, the setting is current with the present time and day and takes place right around the holiday season. Even though the play itself isn't specifically about Christmas, it is chronologically reflective of the time of year. So for instance, it could be a play about a singer who is trying to make up her mind about giving her life to the Lord and somewhere in the story line, they exchange gifts or say, "Merry Christmas" or make references along the line to the festivities. |
