Can someone help an idiot with a lapel mic?

Hi. I go to a small church and all the technologically gifted people recently left, so I'm trying to figure out our lapel mic. It's a Telex FMR-50. Our sound system looks like a basic receiver with a tape deck and a cd-player in it (just like you have at your house.) The receiver sits on this this Peavey mixer amp XR-6006. It looks like the Telex plugs into one of the openings on the mixer. So, I turn on the switch that's on the battery pack that you wear on your hip and I turn on the Telex receiver thing as well as the mixer and receiver. The battery is new so it fires right up. But it does not pick up the voice at all. If you put it right up to your mouth and blow, you can hear that through the speakers, but not a voice. The system is old and we don't have any books anymore. Does anybody have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I have a picture of the front of my system if that would help. I really appreciate any help. Thank you.

First of all you should NEVER blow into a microphone. If you want to test it, tap it lightly or speak into it. Take pictures of both the front AND the back of the entire setup. Also get closeups (front and back) of each piece of equipment so that I can see your settings.

Then from there I can probably figure out what is going on.

Hi,
After trawling through the Peavey website I couldn't find the XR-6006, but I did find the XR600B and the XR600G. I've attached two pictures if you could identify your mixer, that would be a big help. I've also attached a picture of the channel inputs of the XR-600G. Is the cable from the FMR50 connected to the connector that says mic? Is the -20db pad disengaged?

OK. I have a picture of the front, but I can't get one of the back, because it's in a big wooden case. The Telex receiver is on the left. It is plugged into the #2 spot on the mixer amp thing. Also, I was just down there and turned it all on and now I can tap and hear it, but I have to tap pretty hard. I can also get it to pick up my voice but only if it's right up at my mouth and it has a fair amount of static noise.

I really appreciate your help!

I guess you have tried the obvious by turning up the master volume but if you have not, it sounds like that is your problem. Also have someone in the room with you while you are wearing the lav. It might be possible that you can't hear yourself through the system because your own voice is louder to you than it is percieved through the system but someone else sitting in the sanctuary can probably hear you just fine.

Something obvious to check .. what does the audio meter on the receiver look like when you talk into it? If it's not doing much at all, check the RF Carrier indicator and make sure the RF side is pretty decent. If it is, check the transmitter sensitivity (might also be marked "mic gain"); you may just not be deviating the transmitter much at all.

It looks like you have the Peavey XR-600B. I've attached a copy of the manual.
You seem to have connected it properly. How old is the wireless receiver?

Thank you for the manual. I really don't know how old the receiver is. I tried it again last night I tried the lapel part (that's when it seemed to work when I had it right up to my mouth.) Then I plugged in this other mic thing we have for it that hooks on your ear and extends in front looks like something Madonna would use. It works fine. I know what you're thinking, the lavalier is bad. We assumed that too and bought a new one. In summary, The old lavalier does nothing, the new lavalier works if you hold it right up to your face, and the Madonna mic works fine.

Did you plug the Madona mic into the beltpack, or directly into the mixer?
