Bash Built my first computer!!!... the sound doesn't work though

Hey guys,

I built a computer last week to replace a computer in our church office. It went really smooth... took 2 hours to put together, powered up the first time. Installed the OS, updates, drivers, MS office, other software etc...
System specs: Ultra gladiator case w/500w PSU; 2.66Ghz intel core 2 duo @ 1333 FSB; Asus p5k-v motherboard w/ onboard vieo; 2GB DDR2-800 PC2-6400 240pin centon RAM; 320Gb hitachi desktar Hdd; lite-on combo drive.
A special thanks to CMN'er Danny (sharinglife) for selling me the parts for the computer.

So everything is working smoothly right? Mostly, but I can't hear any sound with headphones on or thru speakers I have all the drivers installed except for one that I can't find the driver for. It says "PCI" with the "?" mark next to it. I don't have any PCI cards installed so I don't know what it's for. But it might have something to do with the sound not working. anybody know what the problem might be?

thanks in advance,

Steve

So the sound driver is installed OK? And the sound shows up in the device list? (Assuming WinXP or Vista)

Is there a mute button on your Motehrboard/case somewhere? Is there a setting in bios to turn sounds off/on?

Is the volume control turned up and not muted?

Even though there aren't any PCI cards in your computer, the on-board sound electronics are probably on your PCI bus. It sounds to me like you don't have the right drivers for the on-board sound. A lot of times the motherboard needs special drivers for on-board stuff. Did your motherboard come with a driver disc? You should check out the disk and install pretty much everything on it.

Also, if you have a high definition audio card, (most seem to be, anymore), you will need KB888111 from Microsoft. But you can't get it from Microsoft. Your hardware vender needs to get it and pass it on to you.

Of course, I doubt that is the case if you are using Vista rather than XP.

@ Tim, I installed everything on the disk (that came w/ the mobo) that could be installed.

@ Joel, XP, sound is unmuted - volume is up... I'll have to check the BOIS settings to see if there is an option for sound to be on or off.

I don't have an HD sound card but I do have HD audio built in, would I need that driver if I have the built in audio?

Probably. It should have come with your driver set for the HD audio.

And it needs to be installed or the HD audio drivers won't install.

That's been my experience, anyway.

I checked in the BIOS and it said that HD audio was enabled. I'll have to look again @ the drivers I got.

I had the problem on a computer and had to check on the sound sound itself to find out what it was and then go and find the driver. It wasn't pretty, but it worked. The web is a wonderful thing.

Steve Steve Steve,

That is part of the motherboard...the one part you didn't buy from me. (just messin with ya bro) You got that from NewEgg, right? You won't get much support there...so I'll see if I can help you out here.

My experience is that before the audio driver will install...especially if it's HD audio...you must have XP's SP2 installed before the audio driver will install. You might pop your cd back in the drive and run it again...and see if it installs this time. Because I'm pretty sure you didn't have SP2 installed when you ran it the first time...is that right?

Let me know. If that isn't it...we'll go to the next step.

Ahhhhh, you right man I totally forgot that was the thing I didn't buy from ya'.... sorry about that. You're right though, I didn't have SP2 installed when I ran the drivers. I'll try installing the drivers again with SP2 this time. Sorry about that
