Internet Filter

I know filters have been discussed before but I can't seem to find anything that fulfills my requirements. I need an internet filter for my husband's computer (Windows XP) that will allow me to set different filter levels for different Windows users. Any suggestions?

LeAnn

Thanks but free would be even better. I found this one http://www1.k9webprotection.com/ but I'm wondering if I can only use it on my children's windows user profiles and not on my husband's. Not that I think he will need to be looking at any inappropriate sites but because sometimes these filters will block things that don't need to be blocked.

On their FAQ page it says that if you get to a page that it blocks it gives you the option to put in a password that will allow you to access the site. I don't see that it says you can make it user specific. Probably not a bad thing though. It keeps people from stumbling upon a site by accident.

I decided to download K9 and try it out and it seems to work pretty good. I don't think I can set up multiple profiles but it seems to block what needs to be blocked and doesn't what doesn't need to be blocked. And even if it does, like you said, you can enter a password to unlock it. I think this is a winner!

Covenant Eyes

Has filter only or accountability only or both. I believe it can have different users also.

I, like many others, like OpenDNS - but it doesn't let you set different levels. (well, unless you can set up different profiles on the same machine - hmmm, I'll have to check that out)

I like my iBoss appliance. Although, if ida known about OpenDNS before purchasing my iBoss, ida checked that out first.

Like OpenDNS, iBoss will protect all devices coming through your router. That's what attracted me to it. Not only are the computers covered, but the Wii, PlayStation Portables X-Boxes, etc are also blocked.

The newer version (which I don't have yet) will allow you to assign user profiles with different levels.

K9 is really nice. I have used it on a few computers for people that needed filtered internet. You can always use the password to allow access to a site.

the scheduling setup is really nice as well.

SafeEyes is a good one. I have it installed and it is very manageable and will let you configure it for different users.

We use OpenDNS for our church's secure and open systems (wired=secure, wireless=secure and open), and I use it as home as well. Ya simply can't beat it.
