Downloading Windows 7

Windows 7 comes in a .iso file and I have a question about burning it to a DVD. When I put in the blank DVD the autoplay dialog popped up and I chose burn a data disc with Windows (or something to that effect) and then I dragged the .iso file to the DVD. Will that work or do I need to use DVD burning software?

Did it work for you?

I have used Magic ISO (not free) that will allow you to burn the .iso to the disc or it will open the file in an "exploring" configuration so you can find the setup files and what not, and not have to burn a DVD.

Well it appears the file is on the disk but I'm not sure if it will be bootable.

In case someone comes along and wants to know if the ISO would have worked by itself no it would not have booted. You needed to use software that would take and ISO and create the bootable DVD.

Yes. Burning a data cd would put the .iso file onto the disk. This is handy if you want to copy the image to another computer, but not to put the image directly on the disk.

Just to keep in mind: The Release Candidate of Windows 7 will expire in June 1 2010. After March 1 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every 2 hours. You cannot upgrade the Release Candidate to a final licensed version of Win7, so you will need to format the PC.

This is what I use at work and at home for burning ISOs. Very easy to use, and no frills.

No, if you burn a data disk it will just be a disk with the iso as a file on the cd, it will not recover the iso to the disk, so it will not be bootable. You will probably need a third party software like Nero.
