Live Video Streaming & Encoding

I've read several posts on this subject, but I thought I'd ask specific questions regarding my plans.

I need advice on live video streaming & encoding. (We're planning a one-camera shoot.) What encoder are you using and why? Be specific. Is it portable, rackmount, or a computer card? Why did you choose this model? What would you do differently? I'd appreciate any advice you can offer based on your experience. Also, what camera are you using and why? How can I determine how much bandwith is needed? Thx.

I'd like a portable solution so I can webcast from our sanctuary, Family Life Center or a large classroom (all of which would need a high speed internet connection).

Same issue...solved

Hi,
I tried to tackle this same issue and promised if I ever got it solved,I would be more than happy to pass it on.
We film every Sundays service for the next weeks tv broadcast,so I had a audio and video signal....but,much like your self finding something portable and affordable was hard. I simply used a splitter of the existing video feed and stream to ustream (free) ,with adobe flash media encoder (free) , through a Happauge win tv stick (59-89 bucks)...since it plugs in to usb.....and is a handheld stick I use it on laptops which gives you the potability, and desktops....my suggestion is a win tv 1600 or above....make sure it has RCA connections along with Cable TV....many times, and it is best, you can simply firewire straight from the Camera. Hardest thing is to make sure you have a adequate inet connection.

I just came back from a seminar, and it is really simple to do at a very low cost....watch out,DO NOT let a company or service sell you something you do not need ! Build a audienece base, then if needed go to a streaming company if needed. Contact me at pages @knology.net ,if you have a question.
Good Luck.

tchild,
Thx for the info. The WinTV 1600 is a card that allows you to watch/record cable TV on your computer. How do you use this card for live streaming your broadcast over the internet? As for firewire, are you using long firewire cables? Any problems with long cables? I've looked at Ustream. I like the free part, but I didn't like the ads that run. Do you have 3rd party ads or other info on the screen of your life webcast? I assume you link from your churches website to your dedicated Ustream "channel".

Again, thx for your help. I'm a video producer. I can get pre-produced videos (wmv, mov, Flash) on the web with no problem. Live webcasting is new to me. I've been chasing a lot of dogs, now I'm ready to zero in on proven technology. Thx.
