When Clients "get it"

Don't you just love after you do an install and training, and you have seen the client floundering a little, but you go back 6 months or so later and they have really gotten it? One of my clients I went to visit them and they now have gotten it all down. Good sound mix, getting their money's worth out of video and lighting, really pulling everything together. It made me happy.

On another note I have found as I get older I love hymns more and more. I really hated them as a teenager, and now I like them a lot (I like them with guitar and drums and bass).

I feel the same way with my web clients. It is great to see them get it and so some things you never imagined they would be able to do.

I would have to say that when your client completely reconfigures what you initially installed and it works better than the way you originally suggested, then that is an indication that they REALLY get it!

I installed a system that I "idiot proofed" but on my followup visit, they changed everything around so dramatically that I actually learned some things from them.

Lately I've been dealing with the following:
  1. Someone asks me to help them with a tech project
  2. I spend an inordinate amount of time researching the right way to do it
  3. I tell them how I think it should be done and give them the price list
  4. They decide it's too expensive and try doing it a cheaper way
  5. They struggle for weeks/months trying to get it to work
  6. They eventually get fed up and ask me if I can make it work
  7. I repeat #3 to them
  8. They relent and buy what's needed
  9. I install/configure and it does exactly what they want
  10. They are happy
  11. Reset to #1 and repeat again the next project

I just have to wonder how many more times we need to go through this before we can start skipping steps 4 through 7.

What you need to add to that list between 9 and 10 is:

"Customer asks why you didn't suggest this in the first place?"

One of the things you learn in ministry is that you're most effective when someone submits an idea, genuinely believing it to be their own, which you have been suggesting for the previous two years.

When you first start out you want to pull your hair out, but after a few years you just rejoice that the kingdom is being built.

Amen to that, Dan.

In the end, it's not about who has the idea, but that God's work gets done...

I saw a quote a while ago:
