Talking Pictures For next year's sports camp, I want to interview a famous athlete but since we can't afford one I figured we can do the next best thing and fake it. I saw it on the late late show a long time ago. The host would interview the president. On the screen is a still of the president and someone's lips are masked in and talking. I want to do a live interview. If this makes any scense please clue me in on how I can do it live. I'm a little confused on the masking part. Thanks

It can be done with a Lumakey or Chromakey effect. Actually, it is incredibly simple, but you need the right equipment. A switcher with DSK ability and either a still store or computer going through that switcher that has the photo of your celebrity with their piehole painted over chroma or luma with a graphics program. Adjust the blend on the edges so it is gradient. The live shot coming through one bus and the photo another. The specifics on that will depend on your switcher and if it is chroma or luma. Adjust the color tint of your live mouth so it matches more closely to the photo.

You can fake live. Have a script, and pre-record the "via sattelite" portions. Have your pastor live on stage for his part. Of course, you have to trust your pastor a lot to put him in that position. This could give you more time to make the mouth work.

Now, shoot the stunt mouth with the person sitting absolutely still (using a tripod). Have the image ahead of time so you can shoot from a similar angle, with a similar size shot, so you don't have to tweak the size and placement of the mouth (using the motion tab). Paul |

Paul's procedure is how I've done this in the past. The trick is to get the speaker to not move their head while using exagerated mouth movements. We had them lean their forehead against a bar that we secured at the correct height. This allows the jaw to move freely, but keeps everything in the same spot. The two main issues are color and size matching. We did this on the still image as it's much easier. We also fooled with the still image a bit so the eyes could blink. As a silly alternative you can turn the video of the mouth upside down. It's hard to describe, but looks pretty funny. I've also done the Monty Python style where everything (mouth movement) is done on the still image. Once you 'get' the technique it's quite easy and doesn't take too long. Best regards, PCH
