The other information that would be helpful is what wasn't right when you hooked it up, and what are you trying to achieve with this setup?

Well I just need the optimal setup. I have the panasoic egp-7 and the picture doesn't stop jumping. I don't know where or how to calibrate it all. I just want to make sure all of my stuff is connected for optimal performance. Do I need any more components?

Its important to know what you are trying to achieve. Do you want to recording something for DVD's/post production, do you want put images onto the projector screen, do you want to stream something live on the internet?

For the moment, this is my advice; remove the EGP-7 from the system completely! I'm struggling to find much information about it at the moment, but it seems that it may require timing, which your system probably isn't setup to do. If you could get the model number the panasonic switcher, that would be helpful, at the moment i'll guess and say its an MX-50

Since I don't know any details about your equipment, i'll make some assumptions to give you an idea of a setup. If you could post photos of the gear, that would be another way of identifying it.

So, I'll assume that your distribution amplifiers have multiple channels. Each output of you camera goes into one channel of your DA(distribution amplifier) then from each channel of your DA, one output goes to a preview monitor, and the other output goes to the input channel of the switcher. The same is done for your computer, except if the computer doesn't have a composite video output, then you'll need a scan converter. The channel of the DA that the computer output feeds into needs 3 outputs. One to a preview monitor, one to channel 3 of the switcher, and one to the external camera input on the switcher. The switcher has two outputs, assuming its an MX-50. I would use one to feed the Magna monitor, which will be your Line monitor, and the other output can go off to a channel in the DA; then the outputs if this channel will go off into your monitors and/or projectors, and your streaming computer and recording deck.

Does this make sense, does it work correctly?

Can cover audio too, but we really do need a better explanation of what you are trying to do.

To me, it sounds like this setup needs a black burst generator. You can purchase a brand new one from Markertek for under $200 or a used one from eBay for a little less.

Last year my ancient (c. 197 generator died and the improvement with the new Kramer replacement made me think I had purchased new DVR decks as well...

Simply put, its a relatively inexpensive and easy to install piece of equipment that helps pro video gear that doesn't "need" sync perform much, much better.

Peace,
Kevin

I just googled the Panasonic EGP-7. It looks like an effects generator not a switcher.

Additionally, do you mean you'll be showing this on broadcast television or for projection (IMAG)? I'm not seeing any sort of recording device.

Record deck was on his list.

I'm not sure if a black burst generator would be particularly useful; the panasonic switcher should be able to provide a genlock signal to the EGP-7; but i'm still not exactly sure what a EGP-7 is for.

But more details is what is needed here!

First of all, from personal experience I would advise against the conclusion that the equipment is installed incorrectly if you aren't sure as to how it should be configured. It could very well be connected properly for what the last guy was doing and perhaps there is something that isn't activated.

Secondly, referring to the "9 ways to skin a cat" analogy (and while I am thinking about it, who ever decided that skinning a cat was a good idea in the first place ) but you can connect your system over 100 different ways and each configuration can be considered "most optimal" based on your needs and the desired results.

Lastly, take pictures of your equipment. Get closeups front and back and a wide or panoramic shot of the entire setup so that we can see what you have and how it is all connected.

If you have a jumping picture, first make sure that every piece of equipment is turned on. It could very well be a situation where something in the genlock chain is turned off which would probably interrupt the signal.

Camera sweet

Ok guys keep the information coming.. Let me add some detailed information here and see if it gets me any further. I'll try to be as detailed as I can so that I don't bore everyone. I added a pic but it's dark and it doesn't do anything except show you my layout in the control room.
Equipment list:

I have 3VA sigma distribution amps (pictured)
and 1 sigma Black burst generator
I have 2 Panasonic Analog Broadcast Cameras with the Brains in my control room
Then I have a XL1 hooked up too..
I also have 2 super VHS broadcast quality panasonic decks (which I only run sound through right now)
I also have a magna monitor
6 preview monitors and 2 computers.
and a matrix switcher
2 projectors.. Heres my setup and what I do currently

PC 1 for easy worshship runs into a distributor (RCA from radio shack) I split the signal to 1 preview montor, 1 into the wjmx50 and 1 into the matrix switcher

Camera 1 feeds the brain which goes into the switcher
Camera 2 does the same as above
Camera 3 goes into a distribution amp.. then to the switcher. then 1 feed out to the board and the other to the preview monitor

PC #2 I use for live streaming. It recieves an S-Video feed directly from the switcher

The switcher feeds PC#2, the record deck, and one into the Matrix switcher.

The matrix switcher goes into the distribution amp as a feed. The distribution amp then sounds Outs to the projectors (2 of them) the nursery TV and the Stage monitor.

The matrix switcher allows me to put a direct feed of camera 1, easy worship, or the switcher. This way I can feed the projectors easyworship while I'm shooting crowd shots to the web and DVD for recording.

Ok hopefully this helps.. I don't know that I even have the black burst hooked up right now. So hopefully this provides more detail.. Also on the distribution amp. How do I know when to cap something?

Looks like you've got a good setup there!

The question to ask yourself is what do I want to do that this setup can't do for me at the moment? If you are content with what its doing now, then I don't see any reason to go changing things around, especially if you don't have much experience setting up this sort of gear.

If there is something new you'd like to do, then let us know, and we'll hopefully provide some useful advice!

The thing is I don't have the Black Burst generator hooked up, nor do I think I have the amplifiers in the right spots.. Where should they be? Also I'm finding that every sunday I'm having to Re-Adjust color at what not...
