Ready to Video service and stream on the web.

Greetings,

Our media ministry is ready to go to the next level by recording video and editing it for broadcast, duplicating, and web streaming. We are starting from scratch. I need suggestions on implementing a starter setup that can be upgraded incrementally.

We would prefer to use PTZ setup with joystick controller and monitor, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What is your pastor's preaching style? Does he stay mostly behind the pulpit? Step out once in a while? Or is he all over the place?

If he stays put, a PTZ will work well for you. But if he's all over the place, you'll definitely want a manned camera on a solid tripod with a fluid head.

Preaching style

My Pastor likes to move around. However, he mostly stays within 3-4ft of the center aisle on either side in front. He is behind the pulpit approx. 50% of the time.

PTZ will work if you keep the shot wide. But if you zoom in for a head-to-waist shot and try to track him while he's moving, a PTZ is going to disappoint.

How far from the pulpit will your camera position be?

What petereit said. Do not assume that with a PTZ camera system that you will be able to pan, tilt, or zoom with the camera live. You won't like the results.

Why not use a standard camera setup like anyone else?

I was thinking P.T.Z would allow us to multitask more if necessary and that it would be more comfortable controlling the camera from a seated position.

Spend some time and look through discussion forums and read the comments from people who have to use PTZ systems. You'll find some common threads: unacceptable response lag, servos failing much too frequently, and most just throwing up their hands, presetting 4 or 5 wide, static shots and just switching between them.

I have installed a lot of these systems. What the guys said is right, even with the $8k PTZ cameras you still will not be satisfied with the movement. Peterit hit the nail on the head. We encourage each customer to get a manned camera with their PTZ system if they want to follow subjects with the camera. Plus if you go off-site you can bag up the tripod camera and take it with you!
