MOther's Day Ideas

Our Sunday School department is in charge of our Mother's Day service. Any ideas on unique gifts or recognition. We would really like to come up with something different than the normal "oldest Mother, Youngest Mother" type contest, since the same people seem to win every year What are some things that your church has done??

We don't have contests any more for the resons you cited. Instead we have every child come to the front of the sanctuary and personaaly select a carnation that they can then deliver to their mother. We have the dad's or ushers cover for any nursery children or children not in attendance. It is amazing to look across the sanctuary at the end and see all of the flowers in the mothers hands.

We just have them all stand and the pastor prays for them. Sometimes we show a video clip saying how great moms are.

we got tired of doing the same old flowers or tea parties.. so this year we are doing a whole "Mom your a Star" themed Sunday.. Kids are going to recite a poem and make necklaces with stars on them, teens are doing a short skit about mother's day, then we will have a time where we honor all the mothers.. with gifts (makeover, chocolate and candles, and a spa gift basket), then the pastor or pastor's wife will share a message about the importance of real mothers in our world today!
we're decorating the whole church like a hollywood awards show... making mom feel like real VIP... ushers will be dressed in suits and usher moms to their seating, and teens will be paparrazzi taking pictures of the moms down the red carpet.... we've never done it this way before... so we'll see how it goes

I remember it was always tense at my grandparents church cuz it was mostly old people, but they would do the youngest/oldest and there would always be some 15 year old granddaughter that was there that day.

We are doing a tea packet seen HERE.

We are going to be kicking off a series that day about the family.

We've got some devotional books ($1 a piece) for each mom...and we'll be doing baby dedication day that day as well.

We made a video in a church we were at featuring many of the moms in their homes and set to Probverbs 31:10-31 as a Voice Over. It went over very well and wasn't difficult to create as the Probverb passage suggests the shot list.
If you do this, find the right worman to read the passage, record them and then shoot the cut-a-way shots.

our church does the following:

Oldest Mother
Mother with youngest baby
Mother with most members of their family present
Mother who has most recently adopted a baby

...and we give them a mug/devotional, etc.

Our Cherub Choir (preK - 2nd grade) always sings on Mother's Day. Afterwards they give all the moms some kind of little gift. Last year all the moms got hugs and kisses, the Hersey's kind. This year the kids will be planting a flower in a dixie cup during SS & passing those out.

I like the video idea. You wouldn't even need video of the mothers, you could use stills and "Ken Burns" them.

But using pics/videos of mothers in the church to illustrate Proverbs 31 is a great idea.

The video is a great idea and tool, last year I used photos from mothers and their children and not to mention photos of mom's as children. Put it together with the song "You Raised Me Up", not a dry eye in the house and we got many requests for copies of the presentation.

It actually is now a keep sake for me as my mother has gone on to be with our Lord.

We're focusing on mothers giving advice to new moms. There are a large number of expecting mothers in our congregation now. We'll do a video of moms advice to new moms and probably pray over the new moms. This is a new angle for us, and very appropriate to where our congregation is at right now.
