Replacing a laptop screen

Anyone replaced a cracked laptop screen? Friend emailed wanting help replacing his Dell laptop after it got crunched. Sources for replacement parts?

I've done it before for a IBM laptop with a screen that I purchased on Ebay.

If you know what your doing and can get the part at a reasonable price, it can be easy. I suggest looking up technical manuals if you don't have experience with doing it. Be careful with the bezel front, they can be tricky on some models.

It's pretty easy, you should be able to find a replacement screen on ebay. Dell has service manuals on their website for most (if not all) of their laptops, they should show exactly what you do and don't have to take apart to replace the display.

I've replaced the screen on a Dell Inspiron and my 15 year old son has done one also. It's pretty easy. The only tools needed were a set of jewelers screw drivers.

I've gotten a couple of these on sale: http://www.meritline.com/30-in-1-scr...--p-34859.aspx

They are indispensable for working on electronics.

I am a computer geek by trade and replacing a laptop screen is not hard. There are probably little rubber bumpers on the bezel, these usually hide screws. Remove the screws and grab the joint around the edge of the bezel with your fingernails and the bezel will pop off. Sometimes there is double sided tape on the back that needs to be pried away gently. Remove the screws holding in the screen and get the number off the back. Be careful with this step, it must be an exact match and sometimes mfr's use different screens in two of the same model laptops, so don't order by model of the computer, make sure you use the number off the back of the screen. Type into google or ebay. Order part re-assemble. Should take less than 30 minutes. Just be gentle with the plastic parts they can break easily and are difficult to find replacements for.
