CD Forked Thread: Jumpy DVD after pause

Forked from: Jumpy DVD after pause

What causes jittering in a DVD recording if the master file is ok? THe recording drive or running other software while recording? Or the playback drive?

By master file

you mean the avi or something else other than an mpg file, I guess?

If your source file is fine, then its probably happening on the rendering-where your pc converts it from say an avi file to the dvd format as it burns to disc. Actually, most programs will do this in two passes-first they'll render, then they'll burn.

If the playback stutters on all machines/dvd players you put it in, then something likely happened during the rendering-not enough to scuttle the rendering, but enough to stutter on playback. It could be a lot of things-underpowered machine, periodic software updates, av scans, etc....

Thanks Kbob

The "master file" was done on a custom setting Mpeg 1 with a 2900 bit rate? (I think that is the right term, I'll find out tonight) this was with a small screen size as well. This was done to save space on my laptop's HD. This was then burned to a DVD - R using Ulead's Movie Factory software. The Nero I have didn't let me burn for both playing on a DVD unit and PC, so I used this software. I'll try the DVD on other units at church and home. Since I had the image up at about 8' x 6' would this make the jumps more noticeable as to being played on a 17" computer monitor?

What version of nero do you have? I'm on nero express 6 suite-see if you have nero digital, nero vision express available under the menu items for nero. If so, you can do some nice authoring of dvd's there.

How long is your project?

You generally want to keep it shorter than an hour per disk for it to be of similar quality to store bought dvd's-while you can easily squeeze two or more hours into a single layer dvd, generally, the best quality is at the shorter settings.

If that's not the issue, then using nero vision express, choose make dvd, dvd-video. From there, you can choose video files (avi, mpg, avi, asf, mp4, and unlocked vob files are all supported in my version-YMMV) to add to your project.

Once you get this far, and have the clips in the order you want, click on more (if the sub menus aren't already displayed) and then click on video options down near the bottom of the screen-under the banner nerovision express options and settings.

On the second tab, labeled dvd-video, make sure its set to automatic (unless you are making a 16:9 video, or using sources from both 4:3 formats and 16:9 formats-remember, though, that dvd's can't natively support hi def content, but can support 16:9 letterboxed video). set the quality to high, sample format to progressive, the encoding mode to high quality (2-pass-and yes, that means it will take longer-but hey, it'll look better. Audio format should already be set to dolby digital ac-3. Click OK, and let'er rip-well there are menu's to set up, but I'm sure you can handle that.

Hope this helps-if you don't have a full version of nero, this might be a good time to get it. Its worth it just for nero vision express, IMHO.

So this is what I did tonight:

copied the video clip (715 mb) to my 4gb quick drive and burned a new DVD- video using Sonic at home. This took up 2.3gb on a DVD - R disc. Looks fine on the computer and the dvd player at home. I'll test it out with the older player at church tomorrow. I think I'll be able to post it on the web site should be up later this week. I didn't see the jumps in the first spot on this dvd master, haven't watched the whole thing yet.

Thanks for your help.

glad it worked for you

and let us know how it turned out.

Sounds like you had it squeezed both sample rate and image size-both of which can cause long rendering times. That's usually where dvd authoring programs get into trouble-either the hard drive throughput fails to sustain the throughput, or total system resources get snaggled up.

Thanks

I'm making a wmv copy now to upload to our YouTube account if I can get it under 100mb and still look good. Or maybe I'll need it edit into clips, we'll see. How did it go from about 714mb to over 2.3gbs? I can see how it could go down in size but going up?? What is it adding a bigger screen size??

Well I uploaded a 10 minute video clip or so to our YouTube account and posted the html to a new page in our sermon site, guess what no sound. I've got an e-mail into YouTube about it. But if you want to see the play and not hear it go to the link in SMTV below.

if you went from 320 X 240 to 640 X 480 it would mean that your size should go up by a factor of 4 (check the math this way-(4 x 3) to (8 by 6) would be 12 versus 48-in other words, four times as much! Your compression rate might come into play as well-so yes, it will get much larger if you were going from 320 X 240 up to say 720 X 480, my personal fav setting for dvd's.

Not sure on the sound-I just say no to the youtube thing so far-just can't be sure what's safe, copyright cool, etc....but YMMV.

Ok, but where does the 4x "extra" stuff come from? Another words dose a pixel{?} that takes up 1x2 space now takes up a 4x8 space? Starching out the data that is their? Also what is YMMV?

what used to be 1 pixel will now be 4-they use interpolation tricks to keep it from looking blocky, but that's the gist of it.

YMMV-your mileage may vary

Thanks, and that is what takes time to convert. Also YouTube has been good for us so far. The clip was only about 28mb and the limit is 100mb. Will wait another day for them to respond than I'll resend it. I gave the video a C++. Need work on the back stage lighting and not having over zooming also some of the side shots need more light.
