the duct tape statement was a joke, but it is expected of me to go easy on consumables, which i buy gaff tape and the sr staff gets the bill, they freak...go get duct tape they say, ummm that will be a no, i cant clean them off effectively

For some reason we never labled cables....and this past Sunday just started (so I am getting a kick out of finding this thread) but we tried the gaffers tape, and other options, but settled on one of those Brother label machines...with the white tape, very read-able but not sure how the long term sticky-ness of the labels are.

I use Brother TZ Tape for their P-touch labelers. They now have a Flexible ID Tape which is designed for cables and other objects with sharp bends. It comes in 1/2", 3/4", 1", and 1 1/2" widths, although the 1/2" is the most popular at retail stores (i.e. Staples), the other widths you would probably have to order through www.brother.com. At this point Brother only offers this tape in white with black ink. Blessings, and here's to readable labels on cables ![]()

For permament cables or connections, I use printable heat-shrink tubing. Kroy makes white tubing in a number of diameters that will print in their K3000 printer. The printer and software are PC-based. The printer uses a serial connection. Seems like a cartridge with about 100" of tubing runs about $30. I try to pre-plan all my labels and print as much as I can on each print-out, as you lose about 1.5" of tubing getting it out of the printer beyond the cutter mechanism. The printer was about $175. Cartridges are also available with normal "tape" type labels, as well.

I recently purchased the Dymo rhino 5000 to use at work. I've been pleased with it so far. You've heard a number of good ways from eveyone here, it depends on how much you have to do i guess. HellermannTyton has the self laminating sheets you run thru a laser printer. They are not cheap running 65.00 to 150.00 bucks a case. If you dont have a ton of labels and are looking to clean your facilty up then Tyton also has a little label dispenser that you use a fine point sharpie on. They will hold up for a good while, but the ink will eventually fade over a couple of years. I have done the p-touch under heat swrink and actually does a good job. It's a fairly economical approach. If you decide because of budget to do it down and dirty style with some form of tape then use console tape, it should last longer than electrical or duct with far less goo. Dont use masking tape thinking it is the same as console tape. Masking tape will dry out in a couple of months and fall off when it gets handled. God Bless! D'Ro
