Also, on the directing side, bring somebody in from a local TV station. That's how I learned...and still am. The GSM from our station directs for us about once a month, so on some Sunday evenings, he'll let me direct and sit right next to me. It's been a pretty good way to learn things 1-1.

Where would I look to get something like that? And how much would that cost? I'm just not sure where to start.

Good old clock cams. Not only can they be a safety cutaway shot, but they're good for seeing what's happening where.

Look at this:

It is what they call a "convertible" camera. We purchased the very last one on that list for about $9000 so that it would be comparable with our $20,000 cameras but you could probably get away with something cheaper.

That's like twice our annual video budget, or maybe 3 times as much. I'm not exactly sure what our budget is, but I know when we bought everything last year we went over our budget for like 3 years, hehe. But, at least I know what to look for on Craigslist or ebay.

A friend gave me a Sony DXC-930 a while back that I've been thinking of putting into that sort of use, that or drum cam. I sure can't argue about the price: it was free!

You will ALWAYS go over budget when you get into Media Arts. Even if you properly budget the cost of the equipment, you still have the ongoing costs of maintenence, repairs, consumables, incidentals, etc.

But another thing that you can do ( which I forgot to mention ) is that on EBay, you don't necessarily have to look for the convertible camera. You could also use the search term "broadcast camera" and find a relatively decent big-bodied camera for a couple of hundred bucks. Even though mounting a studio camera on the back wall might not be as stylish as what I listed, it will get the job done. It would be great if you can get the camera, 26-pin cable and the CCU for a cheap price but if you can only get a camera w/the lens you can still run a 12V power supply and BNC cable to it.

We use a small Handycam for a bail out drum shot.

By the way if you would like to see some of my video go to Youtube and search Esoteric55.

you can find used broadcast cameras on ebay almost any day. i recently helped a small church with a link to a dvcpro panasonic camera with 17x fuji glass and a flip doubler that needed a tape delivery mech repair (500) but they only needed it for their longer shot from the booth, they did not need it for recording. they paid 1700 for it. glass is worth almost that much. so it worked for them. they could have gone the dv route and bought a used one on ebay for 1500 but they are composite and the full size glass gives them a better picture for imag so they love it. you might be surprised what you can find if you just contact a few used broadcast equipment companies and asked for gear that the deck is bad or has been dormant for a long time. any time i am consulting on a project i really try to take a 360 approach to all the barriers and think outside the warehouse sometimes, forget the box.

there are many ways to educate and think you way around hurdles some may work for your situation and some may not.

We actually started out with 3 Sony cameras like that, with the CCU's and whatnot. I don't know how much we paid for them, but we've had some problems with them (the screen will suddenly tint red) so we got a couple Canon XL1s's that are working decently, although I don't find the picture to be as good. Guess that's all for another thread. But my point is that I doubt I could convince the church to get another camera like that when we've had problems. Granted, I don't know if it was the cameras or not, but it's happened to all 3 of them, so who knows.
