Outdoor Set - Lighting effect for water

For Easter we put on what we call Passion Road. It is a drive thru experience where people drive through our lower parking lot and there are 10 stages located along the route. They have actors that act out the story of their specific stage. ie walking on water. The cars have a recorded CD that tells the story with music. OK now my question. One of the scenes is Moses and the parting of the Red Sea. The cars will drive through the Red Sea. Pretty cool - any idea of lighting the set on either side to create the movement of water. We are in New Hampshire, so it is still cold up here. I was hoping to spray some water, but it would freeze. Any ideas?

Mike

American DJ has a few different lights that produce a water effect. www.americandj.com You could probably get them from a rental house.

put a bright spot with a blue aqua gel on it behind a large aquarium, which has an arm that sirs the water. You might want slightly murky water, too. Work the angles so that, either it shines up (source is out of sight) or down (as in coming from the sun above the water).

If you put the light above, make your "water" on either side out of blue curtain, or something that can blow in the wind, and have it back-lit with the filtered spot.

If you put the light below, you can do the same as above, or you can have some kind of cover which the spot can shine on.

I have an Elation H2O that produces the water type effect. It's not too bright, so you have to be careful not to "wash" it out with too many other lights. Sorry--bad pun, but I couldn't help it.

I drive-thru version of the bible! Cool! I hope your event is a huge success. And I hope there aren't too many fender benders.

When I saw the Phantom of the Opera I think they used like fog machines...but I don't know if fog machines are expensive..but you could do it.

Sorry that this is terribly late, but here goes:

You could also rent a Rosco Gobo Rotator and buy a gobo that looks like water. Rosco and Apollo both have very nice gobo catalogues. Gobo Rotators allow you to rotate a gobo at a variety of speeds, which is great for movement effects.

In order to run a Gobo Rotator, you'll also need some accessory cable to connect the Gobo Rotator to the Accessory Pack, and some DMX cable to conntect the Accessory Pack to the light board. Just make sure that you also have some AC power available for the Accessory Pack. And no worries, gobo rotators are super easy to program on any lightboard that has intelligent light capabilities (and most do nowadays).

A more low-tech solution: put some sheer fabric over a fan for movement, and in front of that put a sheet of plexi-glass for shine. Light it from both the front and back, and you should be able to get some great depth and movement.

Hope that helps (for next year at least)!

Catherine
