The Difference a Screen Makes

I bought a Sanyo short-throw 2700 lumens projector that we we are using in a classroom. I wanted a short-throw lens because the seating is tight and I did not want to put the projector in the middle of the seating. The first several times we used the projector I was very disappointed with it. The bottom of the projected image was a lot brighter than the top of the image. It looked like the slide was made to have a color fade from the darker color at the top to nearly white at the bottom. I had been warned about this problem with short-throw lenses. I just could not believe how bad this was though.

I bought a new screen (Draper Diplomat - gray screen). I was shocked about the improved quality of the image. The old screen (and it is OLD) was a shiney silver screen (not a gray screen) and the light just totally reflected off of it so much so that the bottom of the screen looked white with any image being projected on it. The new screen makes the image look so much better. There is only a slight color fade now if you look at it carefully. What a difference a screen can make!

Yet another lesson learned about projecting images....

Bruce

Yeah, a screen is ALWAYS better than no screen and a good screen is ALWAYS better than a cheap screen.

I agree. Someone came to our church to demo his product. We originally consulted him because we thought we needed brighter projectors. But rather than selling us the $5,000 projectors, he showed us that if we bought his screens, we wouldn't need them. It was a night and day difference between what we had and what he was selling us!

Also consider that a lot of these older silver screen units were designed for the filmstrip and 16mm projectors and the overhead transparency projectors.

You are absolutely correct about the difference a good screen makes. With short-throw all the more. I have two of the Sanyo short throws in use and they are wonderful projectors in specialized situations.

On other condsideration with your old screen could have been the angle of the screen supports. With these Sanyos you have to be pretty precisely aligned and an old screen might lean back or forward enough to really trash the lighting and image coming out of the projector.
