I use to keep a cable hoist with me when i went to buildings i didn't know incase someone was like take this spotlight up to the grid which only had a ladder to get up to it and the spotlight weighed 300 lbs.

I might try some sort of bucket and pulley system provided that it does not look ugly. We have a catwalk directly above our sound booth and we are always exchanging equipment from up there.

I'd say either rent the lift as needed, or install a chain pulley or better. If the latter, get the engineering right by bringing in a professional to approve the setup points-and be sure to WAY overspec it. From past experience, if you have it it will be used for things you've never imagined.
