What video codec/settings do you use?

Currently all (SD and HD) of our video backgrounds are encoded in H.264 ever since we transitioned from MS 2.5 to PP2. We do play back some MPEG 2 files every now and then. But, I never really even considered other formats until today.

Which codec and settings do you prefer?

Just to clarify, .mov is a container format, not a video codec. A .mov file may contain any number of video tracks encoded in many different formats. To see what codec your video is, open the file in Quicktime Player and choose Window>Show Movie Inspector. The Format field will tell you what codecs are used. Also in Pro4, you can right click on a video and choose inspect to see the same information.

We recommend H.264 or PhotoJPEG, both at Medium Quality.

Oops. Thanks for the clarification. I thought that was the case but didn't look it up.

We use Apple ProRes 4444 for compositing, Apple ProRes 422 for other video editing and display in ProPresenter, and H.264 for our AppleTV-driven digital signage and web video.

I read a blog post a couple months back that gave us a tip to use PhotoJPG @ medium quality, tried it and have never looked back. We even convert to that codec when the file is already an mov format. We also make sure deinterlace source video is checked. Again, a tip we have found to work best for us.

We use DVCPRO-HD for editing. ProRes was not working with our Fiber Optic San Network.

I found for propresentor its best to useH264 @ medium quality to avoid glitches.

Really? Fiber would give you more than enough bandwidth. Were the drives in your SAN not fast enough? Or was the bottleneck in your local machines?
