Church Bulletin Alternative

Hi all!
I'm not sure if this has been touched on or not, but our church is currently in the process of determining an alternative to the tradition church bulletin. Currently, we have the tri-fold bulletin with all of our weekly announcements in it. Our church is a congregation of about 650, with a lot of younger and middle aged adults. Our budget supports most any ideas that would come along, so throw any ideas that you may have out there.

Set it up so folks could get to it as an intranet page on your wifi from thier phones and tablets.

I'd make it browser based, rather than app based.

We've tried this idea and it didn't work out so well. The availability of the intranet page was announced on our pre-service video loop. The result was tons of folks surfing their phones and tablets during the service. Many folks got so absorbed in it that they didn't even notice when the worship leader asked them to stand. It also led to many being distracted by other messages and things on their phones etc. Long story short, it was a HUGE mess. IMHO it's in everyone's best interest to stick to the whole turn your phones off during worship thing.

Of course the bulletin/event info is always available on our website which we encourage all of our congregants to visit...after Church.

One thing we did do though was change the format of the printed bulletin and have had great success.

It used to be a single 5x7 double-sided page with about a quarter of the back left blank to take notes during the message. We would usually find about half of them left in the pockets on the back of the seats after each service.

We scaled down the bulletin to the size of a large bookmark which after eliminating the note taking area hasn't caused any real problems as far as content space is concerned. We then placed a lined blank 5x7 sheet with pens in the back seat pockets of all the seats.

Now we rarely find any bulletins left behind as most people seem to actually use them as intended and take them home in their bibles and/or put them in their shirt pockets purses etc. The smaller size somehow seems to make them more portable in their eyes. We do not restock the note sheets between services as only about a third of them are used each service so there's always one within reach for the 11 o'clock folks.

Sorry for being long winded and hope this helps.

That's why our Leadership Council wants the IT team to look into a white listed firewall.

But it's good to hear real life feedback.
