I didn't think Powerpoint supported video backgrounds, except for animated GIFs.
I thought you couldn't put text over a video.
But I haven't tried lately.
If it works at all, I would bet that WMV would work best.

PowerPoint 2010 has MUCH improved support for video.
I think you can even put text over video, but I never do.
But, I think background video across slides is not supported (at least not well).
We use PowerPoint 2010 & install the K-lite codec pack.
That combination allows playback of nearly ANY video format, and I have been very pleased with the results.
(K-Lite worked well with earlier versions of PPT too, but 2010 is even better. Moslty because 2010 embeds the video file instead of linking to it)

Reading their site, it seems as if it automatically installs - but need one do anything with PPT?
(Joy of joys, our pastor is thinking of upgrading to either a powerful PC or a Mac and PorPresenter...! Until then.... I'm still working with a Vista machine!)
