Anyone run remote Desktop with PP presentator on a computer in media room?

Our Pastor would like to be able to review notes on his laptop and have it line up with the PP slide he created but since our media computer is in the media room so we was wondering if we had a wifi laptop with him and use the wifi laptop to link it to the computer in media room via remote desktop and he could see the presentator with his notes in it and advance the slides himself remotely.

Anyone tried anything like this before? How it work out for you?

Bill

Remote Desktop

I haven't used RD in this way, but i routinely use a porgram called TightVNC to remote into my servers. I have a web/ftp/sql server and a Trixbox pbx that have no keyboard, mouse, or Monitor, just sitting in a closest. After seting them up and making sure they will boot up properly without the kB/mouse/monitor , and installing TightVNC in the startup group, I just hide them in the closet, and remote in whenever I need to.
Works well, and the wife is happier with less clutter.

I also have installed it on my mothers computer in florida, (I am in Nashville), and use it all the time to fix the little stuff, like showing her how to check her email, etc.

Also there is another program called UltraVNC that has some nicer features, such as the ability to create a custom( with your own logo and such) install package that is smaller than 200Kb I believe. This would be helpful for long distance tech support, as this small package call be designed to be emailed, opened and run by the end user, and will delete itself imeadiately after you are done.

If you were to use one of these programs for you needs, I would choose TightVNC because I believe it has a faster refresh time when viewing remotely.

Jeff

BTW, the tech running the media computer would still retain simultaneous control of the media comuter, as well as the pastor.

AND BOTH ARE FREE!!!!

Yes it can be done...from any computer that has an internet connection I access and operate remotely about a dozen computers using LogMeIn free software. There are several paid versions available but I use the free version. The free version does not have file transfer ability but it sounds like all you need is to operate remotely and the free version does that well. A VERY easy install and operation with very slight lag time. I like that it is...if you will...an install it and forget it program, no need to remember/find IP addresses or configure ports...it does it all automatically during the install-great for networking challenged individuals like me! I think it would work well for what you are trying to accomplish.
Blessings!
Mike

Whenever we have a Powerpoint thingy, I use VNC to control that (it runs on a different box that doesn't have a console on it). It works plenty fine.

Thank you for all your inputs and yes I am aware of the slight lag time and I have test using the UltraVNC but the refresh seem to be not too great on it unless I got a setting wrong somewhere.

I used Radmin at home on my media box which is a greate remote desktop software I ever used but my Church is small and so I probably have to stick with something that is avaliable freely like the VNC.

I will check out that LogMeIn software and thank for putting in some suggestions.

TightVNC

Try TightVNC, it's refresh rate seems to be the best, take a look at the mirror driver! It seems to help.

I'm not totally sure how it would work with the powerpoint, havn't tried it, but I know the program called Teamviewer works very well for me so I can access stuff on my home computer while at University or where ever. This can work on a LAN only setting, also in order to access the computer, you must have the user ID and the password. The User ID never changes, but the password can be random or set to whatever you want. It has File Transfer, remote viewing, remote control, view/control direction switch, etc...definitely worth the look. I have even suggested this to some of my friends who are reasonably high in the chain of command at the University of Lethbridge....they seem to really like the idea, but for business use, your supposed to pay a fee, just home use is free. You could always try and see if it does what you want, then decide whether its worth buying since a Church is considered a business.

.teamviewer.com/download/index.aspx

Also if you guys deal with Mac, using an ipod touch or iphone and iwork 09, you can view notes, next/current slides, and change slides yourself....but I'm assuming that since this is a powerpoint forum, that means Microsoft Powerpoint, so I'm assuming that you don't have Mac....but for womever is curious.....
