Unfortunately without a third party plug-in PPT does not support a text layer over a motion background.

This is the only plug-in I know of that'll accomplish that...

Here are some links to lowcost or free backgrounds/loops you can use:

motionloops.com (free weekly loop- very modern looking)
bluefishtv.com (low cost videos and loops )
worshiphousemedia.com and midnightoil.com both offer monthly freebies.

I know of more, when I find my list I will reply again.

OF course the main thing, as pointed out by rev_65, is getting moving backgrounds to work with powerpoint.

Not without the afore mentioned plug-in from Crystal graphics.
Understand the issue is not whether PPT can play back video. It can. What it cannot do on it's own is playback video and have a text layer superimposed on top of it at the same time, for that you will need the plug-in. Without it, the video layer always stays on top and will cover what ever text you may have.

Ok...now I understand.

FYI...the plug-in isn't cheap but the site offers a 10 video free trial. I'm downloading it now.

I thought about Crystal Graphics back when, but because the PC requirements are (or at least were; I haven't checked recently) similar to that for worship software, and the cost ($149) is a decent chunk of the cost of worship software, I decided to go that way and get the additional benefits like built-in Bibles, song databases, etc.

Good call! I totally agree.

When we went from PPT to MediaShout, the additional plus was in that it comes with a 3 seat license, so we were able to load it on the worship computer; the media laptop, and the kid's ministry laptop.

I'll try again when I have more than a day to mess with it.

If you just want a simple animated background with lass than 256 colors you can always use an animated gif.
