Anyone using the 40D here?

I have been using 20D's for paid work but was thinking about upgrading the end of the year. Does anyone use the 40D yet?

I recently went with a 30D as the prices dropped quite a bit and I couldn't wait for the 40D.

PCH--- have you mastered the 30D? What were you using prior?

I have been booking a lot of weddings lately and would love to justify a Mark III or maybe 5D........they are just soooooo expensive!

Laffs........... (c8

There are so many features and options - it boggles the mind.

So far I'm learning to use the histogram previews and started working in RAW. It's well thought out, but there are many new options. My previous digital cameras were all pre-DSLR - Sony FD11(floppies) and a Sony CD1000(CDRs). The difference in image quality is astounding, but going from 2-->8mp might have something to do with that. I do miss the wider angles and longer zoom of the Sonys as well as the media. The Canon wins hands down for printing though. I also have a Canon A1 film camera that hasn't been used in a while. There are so many great choices these days it doesn't matter much what you choose. The tools are so nice and the brands are mostly equivalent. It's been fun to watch digital catch up to film hasn't it?

PCH-- well looks like you have a lot of fun ahead of you. There is a ton to learn but take it one step at a time and it should be enjoyable. The camera can typically out shoot the person using it.

I am glad that Tim started this photography thread.......thanks Tim!

Ever since I started doing weekly worship visuals for our church, my photography hobby has taken a bit of a back seat (actually it feels more like about 10 rows back). I keep a modest set of galleries on pbase for fun. There are a few "new" shots in the "Recently" gallery (by new I mean about 9 months old), but just now as I'm looking at my pbase pages, I realize how much I miss working with my own photos as opposed to stock. I'll need to get back to that more.

I'm coming up on 5 years now since I got my D30 (used). It's still a pretty nice camera. The only real limitation is print size. I can do pretty nice prints up to 11x14, and have gone larger with the help of bicubic smoother in PhotoShop. I've even had a picture of some Koi published as the cover of a magazine, so I've definitely enjoyed good pictures out of it.

I'm getting asked by a fellow member to take some pictures of our church's art guild works, and the publisher is asking for 8.5x11 at 300dpi which I can't do. I might be looking into just renting a body to do that.

From 20D TO 30D were some minor improvements (they made the review screen bigger, vibrator on the sensor to help with dust are the two I mainly liked) and I understand the 40D is much the same except it's got a rubberized covering so it can handle a bit of moisture (not made for the pool but a mist or light rain should be ok). Other then that I haven't heard anything (nor have I gone out of my way as I just got a 30D and might have waited for the 40D but it hadn't even been announced yet.
I believe that you can also get a "camera glove" which is a rubberized covering for the 20 & 30D units.

I think there is more of an upgrade between the 30D and the 40D than the 20D and the 30D. The ISO performance seems better. Which if you shoot in low light situations a lot would be really nice. From what I've seen it is about on par with the 5D ISO handling.

Scott - what kind of photo work are you going?

I have a Canon 40D

I have used a Canon 300D, I think that is the Rebel for you guys, but when I saw my first 40D I said to myself I have to have it. Well I have it now and I have to say it is the best camera i have ever had.

The larger LCD on the back is great, more detail and better menus. It even takes black and white which i had to do in photoshop before.

Best upgrade since I moved from Nikon to Canon.
