avchd and FCP 7

Has anyone tried or is currently using the avchd format with Final Cut Pro Studio 7? How is that working for you? I am seeing where it is supposed to be capable at least with the intel based macs. I am trying to decide what kind of tapeless hd format is best for Final Cut Pro Studio. Also What format do i need to look for that is going to not require me to render everytime I insert a new clip.

I pull AVCHD into FCP pretty regularly. I just pull the SDHC card from the camera, plug it into the side of my iMac, launch Log & Transfer in FCP, pull up each clip in the preview window, name it, set in and out points and add it to the import batch. When it's done importing I have a bin full of Prores 422 clips ready for editing.

Some people rave about other cameras that save in .mov files because they can just plug in the cards and start editing, but I can't see that working in reality since there's a LOT of workflow optimization and organization that happens in that log and transfer step. Not to mention how foolish it is to edit your source media.

I used log and transfer, but changed the codec from prores to Apple intermediate and got faster results. I'm actually very satisfied with how FCPX does the import. It's much faster.
