Final Cut Pro X

In order to save up for a new computer, I've been putting money into an envelope with the title "iSavings" written on the front. I'm excited that I'm getting closer and closer to being able to purchase a new iMac 27" with a core i7 processor.

I was looking to use the Adobe CS5 Creative suite with PS and Premier. I am now looking at the new release of Final Cut Pro from Apple. I think it is just the answer for someone like me who has limited video editing experience (iMovie, Premiere Elements, ProShow Producer) but wants to step it up to a professional level.

I will still purchase PS CS5 and Illustrator for graphics but have made the decision to go with FCPX, Motion, and Compressor for video!

The new FCPX is getting some raunchy reviews from the pro side. I haven't seen anything on here yet. Any opinions?

As a FCP user myself, though using Final Cut Studio 2, a member of a reseller co-op, I am a bit frustrated at the moment with Apple and how they released FCPX.
Sales through the AppStore don't bother me, however, claiming OEL (end of life) for Final Cut Studio 3, and FC-Express without any warning has left myself and many of my clients in a fix.
For myself, I can function on FCS2 for a while longer, but one of my clients is a tech school, still on FCS2 and we had been planning on upgrading them to FCS3 this summer. Unless Apple Education has a solution, their only option is to upgrade to FCPX, which is not quite yet complete.
Another issue for my clients, is that FCPX won't open previous edition files (so I've read).
Though it has received mixed reviews, I personally wouldn't upgrade because of my work-flow.
For new users, starting from scratch, you may never know what's not complete.
My 2 cents.

The way I looked at FCP vs Adobe Premier was that Premier creates a better work flow with After Effects than with FCP.

FCPX doesn't really give us any appreciable benefit over FCP 6 that we're currently using. Not being able to open previous versions, no multi-cam and removing round-tripping to Soundtrack Pro makes FCPX practically useless for us.

Apple says their new FCPX development strategy gives them flexibility to release enhancements more often. We'll wait and see if the savaging Apple is receiving from their pro community results in some substantial product updates. Until then, since we have the entire Adobe creative suite, we'll probably start looking at Premier.

... and until someone who does a lot of audio editing slams out the $$ on FCPX to know what it can/can't do, we really won't know what it can do.
I use SoundtrackPro primarily for noise removal, but I do use Digital Performer for multi-track editing/syncing with FCP via XML.
We'll just have to wait and see why Apple feels they could sell what seems like a Beta and make their following happy.
Though, the rumors on the next revision of the MacPro being a smaller rackmount footprint, I'm wondering...

I've used FCP X this past week and it's just horrible. It crashed on me 5 times within an hour so I reverted back to FCE for the time being. I had the hardest time using the new timeline interface and I hate the lack of audio plug ins.

I guess Apple assumes that any person doing audio work will do it in Soundtrack (or another editor) but I rarely need the power of that software for the small amount of work I do.

I really think FCP X is a glorified iMovie. For a new user, it might be great. But for someone who has used the older interface for years, I find FCP X very restrictive. It took me forever to figure out how to get to the right sub-menu to just separate my audio tracks.

Look around for the video that Conan's crew did "in honor of" FCP X.

Record Producer Magazine is doing a review of FCPX. I got a preview of the article. Basically, they ask when Final Cut Pro X "Pro" will be released.

As an Adobe Premiere Pro user observing FCPX from afar it would appear that one of two things happened.

1. They released a product that isn't really ready for prime-time. Hoping people will stick on board because "It's Apple and they can't do wrong" until they get all the features in through subsequent releases. They haven't had a meaningful release of FCP in years and have been slowly bleeding users, so they had to put something out there.

OR,
2. They truly are hoping to sell more copies by making it "more accessible" to the everyday user.

I do think it's awfully arrogant of Apple to release this as they have without some of the bread and butter features that make a pro video editing app a pro video editing app and still trying to pass it off as the "biggest revolution in video editing since FCP launched"

First off, get training. The new FCPX does stuff very differently, but has some great stuff to it. Check this link to see a list of useful links.

I really think that it's all of the above. They made a new program with forward thinking ideas and functionality. They obviously priced FCPX to bring in more users. They released it in a state not ready for a collabrative professional environment and in doing so alienated alot of their users. Hopefully, this will be remedied soon.

There is a lot of potential in FCPX, but there are definitely kinks and hold ups. Also, it's a sad day that other apps got dropped for now (Soundtrack, DVD Studio, Color, etc).

The only positive comments I've heard are, "It's a nice upgrade from iMovie".

Releasing FCP X without the ability to open projects from previous versions, along with EOL'ing said previous versions, was, um, unwise.
