The aforementioned converter from Koyotesoft does a good job and it's free. I have not taken the time to compare the time it takes to convert/edit/render versus editing and rendering the .mts files. I need to do that with a short clip and see if the extra step proves to be a time saver. I could also double my computer's horsepower - but that will have to wait.

Just a little note about doubling your computer horsepower. I have an AMD quad processor with 8 gig of ram windows 7 64bit os. I did an 8 minute video project in sony vegas pro 8 32 bit with lots of track motion and specialized graphics. It took 44 minutes to render. I upgraded to Vegas pro 9 64 bit software I ran the same render for a test and the render time dropped to 11 minutes. It's not alwas about the hardware.

Also remember any video effects, like color correction, Blur pretty much anything under the video effects tab will cause a longer render. Had a project that was going to take over 8 hours to render one time and was in a crunch, took out the color correction and edge blur and it rendered in just over an hour. This is on Vegas Pro.
