Sony HVR-M25AU distorted sound

Hey guys, today we bought a sony deck, when I got it set up and plopped the mini DV tape in it, I got a sound that was not there... except for every 30sec or 2min you hear like a split second of sound.

What kind of problem does this sound like?

The tapes are good as I've tried them in a canon xl2 and they're fine. I tried it with two different tapes one being new the other 3 years old, same thing happens with both.

I've put the cleaning tape in and still nothing.

Any ideas?

BTW, I returned this deck and got a new one... the same problem was there. So I returned the "new" one and bought a JVC BR-HD50. The audio works fine now!
