necessary? not at all-but for junkbuster proxy, which I used to use a lot, there's not an easy way to change it, and I've just never really bothered with any of the other proxies I use-mainly just guidescope and tor/privoxy.
I actually use them as much for safety as for privacy. There've been several instances recently where some ad servers got compromised with drive by malware installs/links. Since my proxy's are set to ignore third party images, and no script blocks all non-approved scripting, I'm much more safe than I would be when using no proxy at all.
Tor also obfuscates your ip address-but it's way way slower than guidescope. FF allows you to selectively bypass the proxy server for specified url's, which is what I do. Essentially, I have a list of whitelisted url's, which bypass the tor proxy for speed and to allow the specified sites to serve their own ads (very important!
