Know how much wind a SM58 can handle?

hi. we're hosting our Christmas Eve service outside again this year on top of a hill, and the forecast is predicting wind anywhere from 11-26mph (depending on which weather site i look at). does anyone know at what point the built-in windscreens can't handle the wind anymore? i'm sure there are some specifics about wind direction and everything, i'm just looking for general guidelines here. thanks!

I can't answer your question but I will tell you that if it were me I'd be trying to find an additional foam windscreen to put on it.

Merry Christmas!

57s have much less wind protection than 57s, yet 57s handle all the hot air that Obama can blow their way.

(Sorry, I just could not pass up the opportunity.)

For outdoor use many people put a dry un lubed condom over the mic and then a conventional foam windscreen over that. No I am not making that up.

hey. it ended up being pretty windy at our Christmas Eve celebration, but it worked out. I remembered watching a video on vimeo about making a DIY windscreen out of faux fur. I went to a fabric store, bought a yard of the stuff, cut it into squares and zip-tied them to the microphones. it didn't look fantastic, but they worked perfectly. yay.

I did that once back in college for a project... worked pretty well. If you cut them into a cross shape (like the red cross... all four sides the same size), you can sew in into somewhat of a box. I even sewed in a little elastic at the bottom to hold it on to the mic. That 6th grade sewing class that i was forced to take pays off every so often. It's not perfect, but it stays on well, and when you fluff up the fur, it sorta takes away from the poor construction.
