Logo Design Help for A Novice

Hello All!

I've been working on our church's new logo however I am somewhat of a novice. I have just a little bit of design experience but I guess I just lack the creativity. Anyways, I'm wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction or even give me something to go off of.

I'll give you guys a bit about our church. We are St. John's Lutheran Church of Highland in Pittsburgh, PA. Our slogan is "Making CHRIST Known". Our church sits on top of a hill overlooking the surrounding community. We have been in this place since 1829. We are not a super traditional church (we have a contemporary service in addition to the traditional liturgical ones) and would like the logo to reflect that. We've always had the eagle (for St. John) but if you guys think there's a better option that's ok. I'll attach a few files to help you folks out.

The first one (st.bmp) is our current logo. It appears everywhere, but we've had it for many years and with a new website thats in the works, we'd like something updated.

The second one (logo2.jpg) appears on our current website, but we aren't really crazy about it and it's much too detailed to resize very well. We had someone draw this up for us when we did the current website. It's a great drawing, just not so great of a logo.

If you'd like to check out our website it's at stjohnslutheranchurch.com

I really appreciate any help at all that you folks can provide.
God Bless!

If you want to keep the eagle, I'd suggest something more stylized (e.g., the US Post Office eagle or even more abstract) for a more modern look. (What's the St. John's = eagle connection?) In any event, the basic logo 'rule' of "keep it simple" suggests that the current website one is way too busy, and the earlier BMP one is to some extent, as well.

KeckCreative,

Wow!!! Thank you so much. You did a mch better job than I could ever do. I hate to ask for anything more. But, it almost looks a little cartoon-ish. I'm not totally sure what could be done to fix this. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything I can do for you to pay you back for your assistance.

Thanks. This was a rough draft/concept version and I definitely agree it looks a little too much like "clip art". If however, you like the basic structure, I can continue working on it to hopefully make it look less cartoony. Also are there any color preferences?

In addition to what I do for the church I am a member of, I generally do this as a hobby and as time permits, pick projects to improve my skills and at the same time help others. The only compensation I seek is approval for future use in any portfolio for Keck Creative.

Thanks again. If you don't mind, we'd be happy to have you continue with it. Our website color scheme is mostly blues, So anything in that range would be good. The new Wordpress site I've been working on uses the Antioch theme from ChurchThemes.net. This will be the theme for our re-design of the site. That should give you somewhat of an idea.

Okay. I'll take a look at the Worpress theme and start making some enhancements to the logo. Are you all okay with me including it in any future portfolio?

Okay. I decided to develop another version. Changing from a landing eagle to a soaring one. Also dropped the use of outlines to hopefully reduce any "cartoon" feeling. Let me know if you like this direction or want to return to the landing eagle version.

Wow! Looks great. I definitely like the design of the soaring eagle much better than the landing one. My only concern is making sure that if we have a black and white version or a version on a t-shirt say, that it is simple enough. That was the issue with the old one. When we tried to scale it down you couldn't tell what it was. Just a few thoughts...once again, we really appreciate all of the work you're putting into it!
