The easy way is to use a DI box. PC to DI box with the cable you are using now. DI box to sound board with a microphone cable. OR if the PC is a laptop, unplug it.

Here is always my solution:

Whirlwind PCDI

Cures alot of interface issues including hum.

You could also look at an external audio interface. if you Google that you will get a lot of options.

Have you tried swapping out that 1/8 -1/4 adapter? tried plugging in some regular earphones? sounds like the noise could be a contribution of a bad plug somewhere....otherwise try a DI, most people have a few hanging around, if you don't have an extra one, run to a nearby store and just pick up a cheap one...I like the art stuff personally (since trend is me need something, me buy something....) its treated me well...I've got 2 of these http://www.artproaudio.com/products.asp?type=90&cat=13&id=104
you could also try something like this that meant for AV stuff http://www.artproaudio.com/products....&cat=13&id=131

I run both my laptop and the ProPresenter imac from 1/8 - stereo RCA's and a 1/8 - 1/8 extension - 1/4 (the port on the mixer has RCA's and a XLR/1/4 combo jack...this way I only use one channel out of my 8 for computers...)

We went with both a USB audio interface AND a good stereo DI box. Sounds great, but not cheap.

Sounds good but not cheap usually go together. It is a good thing when the overall system is at a point that you can hear the difference between DI Boxes.

Don't ever use a 1/8" to single 1/4" adapter. You'll be running stereo to balanced and you'll lose anything that's center panned.

You'll want something like this: Amazon.com: Hosa CMP153 Y Cable 1/8 Inch TRS to...Amazon.com: Hosa CMP153 Y Cable 1/8 Inch TRS to...
And to get rid of the hum, just use a DI box and ground lift. If you have only one, use the left channel.

You can build a Wye adapter with 3 resistors. Here is a link

I added a 1/8 stereo jack to my DI box with this ckt. (It is disconnected when a 1/4 in plug is used.
