Or they are the wronge mic for the application. A wider pickup pattern may mean more feedback issues.

If your church is like most the reverb (echo) in the room is great for congregational singing but can be a problem for feedback.

If I ever get the chance to built a new church acoustical design of the room and finishes will be seriously looked at.

Why is this all to common.....

"We have an all-volunteer lay-person group that runs the sound system - most of us are somewhat technical, but have no experience with running a sound system."

But somehow the quality (and expensive) sound systems get installed. I have seen cheep systems sound great and great systems become adequate depending on a "volunteer", but a good sound tech that is paid seems out of the question in many cases...

I wonder why.... Just me talk'n

Training, definitely. I've been doing and learning for more years than I care to count (lest I feel old), and I still keep finding more stuff to learn.
