Ububtu and serial ports

Ok, So i have a Projector connected to a WinXP box via serial! I can open hypertrminal, and send the projector specific commands, and control my projector. Problem is I am the only one nerdy enough to know how to open
Hyperterminal and get the commands correct. i would love to build a small VB program ( or someother language) to have a small window with a couple of buttons, on/off/freeze/source etc. I know this has been done by Shayward and NdEd, here , but i want my own custom program.

Question is this....
because i have only limited access to the church equipment, due to living 30 mins away, I have two computers setup in the garage to test the serial connection. One is a WinXP, and one is Ubuntu, and both are connected via a null modem cable via the harware serial ports. no telnet, ssh, or slip or anything fancy. I can open terminal programs on each and type back and forth, so all is well there! I will write the prog on the WinXP box, and want the Ubunutu box to respond, simulating the projectors responses.

Is there anyway there anyway to "script" the serial port on the ubuntu box to reply to my commands from the windows box?

i'm thinking old bbs style, maybe? FYI i am using minicom on ubuntu, but can change!

JR

You could just write a shell script that sends the commands over serial. Then, you could just put that (or a link to it) on the desktop and label it "Turn Projector On" or what ever that command is supposed to do.

You could try writing a Python script to reply. I've done something like that before myself. If you don't know Python, read a free ebook called A Byte of Python (I think it's still the first result on Google).
