| Seems like Ubuntu is the one getting all the buzz lately. But I think most of them have a download on their sites.

| I've tried a few, and I like Ubuntu/Kubuntu the best. But you can look through the list here: http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html |

| and, while every other day I go back and forth between loving and hating the idea, there is a specifically Christian-oriented release of Ubuntu that includes things like an integrated webfilter and Bible study tools... http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/ |

| Right now Christian Ubuntu is giving me a hard time. It crashes during the setup on almost every PC that I attempt to load it on. The only PC that it didn't crash on was a 1.5 Mhz AMD and after I managed to complete the lengthy setup, I restarted the PC and windows re-booted as if there was no evidence of Ubuntu. I've attempted to download other versions of Ubuntu and Xbuntu but it seems like everywhere I go, the download times out around 50% or so. The only place I have been able to do a successful download is wherever they are hosting the Christian Ubuntu image. Any ideas or suggestions? |

I went to the ubuntu site and just kept trying different mirror sites until I found one that let me download the entire CD. I am getting more success with this version, however, it is still frustrating me. Once I get to the GUI screen it does not do much of anything other than work the mess out of the CD rom. I started the booting last night it seems like all it does is makes the CD start and stop. All night long it was going "whiiiirrRRRRRRrrrrrrrrr" then it would stop and then it would do it again over and over. At some point during the night, the PC and screen went into sleep mode so I figured that it did whatever loading it had to do but as soon as I managed to wake it up, it went back to what it was doing last night. I can see the INSTALL and EXTRAS icons but the mouse movement is very choppy and when I attempt to double click on the icon nothing happens except for more "whiiirrRRRRRRrrrrr whiiiiiiirrrrrrrRRRRRRRrrrrrr". I am patient, and I don't mind waiting if it really takes all night to do an install but its frustrating when it has done absolutely nothing. When I turned off the PC and rebooted off the hard drive, windows was still there and untouched. And with the delayed mouse movements and caps lock key response, it seems as if all of the memory and CPU power is being occupied, thus contrary to the reason why I wanted to switch to linux in the first place. So what is it that I am doing wrong here? Do I need to get red hat or some other version so that it will work on my older PC's? Or is it just something that I am inadvertantly doing/not doing during the booting of the CD? |
