Mac Help Department

OK, I'm needing some step by step help with a few things on these new iMacs and my (not so new) MacPro ... for pretty much a non-Mac user.

My first question is how in the world do I share folders so that I can write to the iMacs in the Sanctuary from my MacPro on my desk over ... a Windows 2003 Server network.

The MacPro doesn't have a Windows server login, of course, it just sort of hangs on the network. It can see pretty much anything I know the names/passwords to on the Windows machines.

I tried the Sharing settings on both the Mac Pro and the iMacs, but while they let me READ the files, there are two problems:

1. Some of the files I copy over have huge permission issues, and I have no idea how to fix them. (source = MacPro, destination = iMacs, FROM the iMac)

2. I can 'see' the iMacs from my MacPro, BUT, I can't write to them for love nor money. I even attempted the "give everyone read/write privs" setting, in desperation, just to see if it would work.

My concern here is that while I'd love to be able to drop things from my desk to the Sanctuary, I do NOT want to have to open up the iMacs to any idiot running around on the network - or even worse, someone who hooks up on the wifi, and thinks they're being cute because they discovered writeable folders.

I don't mind having to know account names and passwords - that's the way the Windows machines worked. Even going from my Mac to my Windows machine, I have to have the login and password to read/write to my Windows folders which are viewable.

Anyway ... yes, evidently I need Mac Networking Without Benefit Of A Server (or maybe in SPITE of a Windows Server) for Dummies.

Thank you,
deb

you can set file sharing with permissions on each of your Apple computers so that only those with permission can access, OR, just put file sharing on in general.
Your Windows machines won't see them, and if they do, won't know what to do really.
So, on each iMac and the MacPro, System Preferences:Sharing:File Sharing - make sure the box is clicked. In the window to the right, you'll see the options for who can and can't have access and what permissions they have.

I guess part of my confusion is that when I followed the directions for sharing, there was nothing that indicated how to give/require accounts/passwords for the folders.

Mark: I found that link last week, and I sort of tried to follow it, but it's talking about things that I just don't know the answers to.

As far as I know, there's no administrator on the iMacs, you just turn them on, log in, and they work. There's nothing that shows up with the names of the other macs ... there ARE settings for groups I've never heard of, tho.

IEEEE!

We have three MacPro's, two iMacs, and a mac mini in the control room. What we do is select the mac (the other mac) you want to get files from or put them to in a finder window (on the left under "Network"). Now, it should ask you for a login. You want to connect using the user name and password for the other mac. That way you're operating with the permissions of the other mac. You should be able to read and right to your hearts content.

You can also permanently connect to those drives by adding it as a startup item in the user profile.

I think there has been a hack for that. Do a search online.
