iMac soundcard

One of our church iMacs has a soundcard problem. If the volume gets around halfway or above, it distorts heavily.

Is this something that a driver update could solve, or would I need to send it away to be worked on? (my guess is the latter).

Thanks

Which version of the iMac do you have?
There is no separate component to 'work on' in Apple computers.
How does the sound distort, through the speakers, headphones, line out to mixing console?

If it's a newer iMac and you have AppleCare, there should be no trouble getting a repair.

In headphones as well as feeding your sound board? (I can only assume you're feeding your sound board).

Actually, it sounded okay through the headphones when I checked it. It's weird, because it doesn't always distort, just off and on.

We are running it through our mixer, but the problem isn't the input on the board or a bad cable, as far as I know.

One other question: The output is noisy (besides the distortion), so I was thinking about getting a firewire interface so I could at least get rid of the hum/buzz that I'm getting from the headphone jack. Would something like a PreSonus FireBox be good for cleaning up noise?

We're using a Macbook running ProPresenter and recently got one of these: http://www.lexiconpro.com/ProductIndex.aspx?ProductID=7

Audio quality is superb now, and has balanced outputs for going right into the mixer. Price was only around $90 I believe.

A Firebox would be along the same lines - so yes, it should really help the noise issues.

The above post is correct, if your sending Audio to your console a lot, then get yourself an outboard soundcard (USB/Firewire), you won't regret it. Anything from Presonus, m-Audio, Lexicon etc would be fine, and it may come in handy if you need to record into computer in the future.

Or you could use the digital output of the Imac, if your console supports that in some way.
