Santuary Lighting ??

I am in the middle of conversation with our electrician. We are in the final stages of our new building. oh yeah we are switching electrician in midstream.
dont ask.

He and I both need a bit of explanation.

We want to mount our dimmers in a closet that is stage right. Its plenty big and
has HVAC vent run to it. It is also the power closet with all the breakers in the same closet.

Is this correct.

X number of Par64 lighting fixture is wired to dimmer pack. Dimmer pack has 1 cable that runs from dimmer pack in closet to soundbooth and say a ETC Smartfade control board. Is this cable XLR or Cat 5?

Are the dimmer packs daisy chained?

and for the record. I have rented two light trees with 4 par lights each two times. That is my lighting experience.

And if we want a touch keypad mounted at door entrance to turn some lights on Where does that wire come from and is it Cat 5 or XLR.

And yes I am talking to some professionals about the equipment I am just wanting to know some of this information for me.

You'll have to dasiy chain your dmx in and out of your dimmer packs. Your 5 pin XLR or Cat5 with 5 pin connectors will have to be run from the dimmer pack to your board.

And probably Cat5 for that keypad, but I guess that would depend on the specs of the equipment. You could always go for an ETC Smartlink station if you have ETC dimmers. They work great.

Your post is very confusing. Are you talking about dimmer racks (usually in a room by themselves with power run out to circuit boxes) or dimmer packs (usually mounted on the lighting positions with power extension cable run to them)?

Remote stations can only be used with racks (specific ones with specific racks) and not with packs.

CAT5 is fine for permanent runs but be sure and use it appropriately.

The control cable from the dimmers to the lighting desk will be DMX which can be sent via XLR cables ( not best option but mostly works ).
the dimmer racks will be daisy chained if DMX controlled.
The touch pad will most likely be cat 5.
the is a lot of new control equipment on the market now that uses cat 5
which can be really handy and useful.
but dont confuse DMX and cat 5 they are two differant systems.
most pro stage lighting is DMX.

DMX is just the standard. Cat5 is just a cable. He could use cat5 to run a dmx signal through.

Yes, as a matter of fact CAT5 is within the DMX standard and preferred on permenant installs to audio cables. By the way XLR refers to the plug not the cable.

Thanks for your replies. You have answered my questions.

We have a closet (Main Power Closet) on the right side of our stage. its about 8 x 14.

This is where we are planing on placing our main amps and Dimmers.

looking at ETC equipment vs Leprechaun .

And yes this is a permanent install Our new church.

I worked with some Lep dimmers at a show I LD'd for, and they were fairly noisy compared to the ETC Unison ones I have in my youth building. I'm very partial to ETC...it's what I've grown up with. And, they're very reliable.

And, just make sure you run your dimmers and amps off of different power if possible.

ETC 24/7 customer service is worth it alone. You don't save a lot by going with Lep.
