I don't have to transcode - the GPU in the macbook just doesn't seem to be able to handle the decompression on the fly. If you read the premiere forums, I'm not the only one.

I've been using a PC and CS4 on a laptop. (Core2Duo/4GB Ram) 1080 24p AVCHD footage plays back ok.

I just upgraded to CS5, and a laptop with an i7 processor and 8GB Ram and an NVIDIA graphics card and the same AVCHD plays back smooth as butter.

I've used Adobe Premier, Pinnacle, and Sony Vegas to edit AVCHD...Sony Vegas was the smoothest and best to use for my needs. Of course this is subject to a lot of variables...but for the simple editing I do Vegas worked great! No need to convert, uses less resources, and runs smoother than Premier. Probably best choice for editing AVCHD with a laptop or a less powerful computer imo. Save yourself a lot of frustration and money...if your looking for an editor download the free trial versions and see which one you like.

You will want to convert it using a program like mpeg stream clip. Unless you are using premiere AVCHD is so compressed that the computer will lag when trying to decode it. Apple proRes is the easiest to edit in. I find avchd to be more of a final format than a format to edit it in.
