HDMI in/ need external video capture

Our web guy bought a Canon Vixia HV30 to record our pastor. The comp that was purchased was an Hp Pavilion dv7. The HDMI was advertised at the store by an associate as being in and out. It is out though right? He was wanting to do video editing but we cannot get the signal into the comp. Is there an external USB video capture card that is capable of HD quality capture so we can start? Thanks.

your experience sounds like the typical consumer electronics store where the customer often knows more than the employee.

Check the model at Dell's website - but I'm pretty sure they don't build anything with HDMI in; the costs would reflect it, too, by the way. Probably in the manner of the Black Magic price above.

Something not discontinued would be nice and external for a notebook.

Oh, here is the non-discontinued version. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc....html#features

I think currently you're going to have a hard time finding an external device that will capture HDMI signals. The throughput required is to high for USB or Firewire.

Something like this might work, allowing you to capture through firewire, but the cost is very prohibitive!

Thanks for the replies... I guess we'll have to figure something else out. It has a DV out too so we can get signal that way. Degraded a bit...

Good news is you can use the HDMI on the computer for a monitor. HDMI to Dvi cable will give you a second monitor.
