Synthesiser Device for Drums

Some time ago I saw a guy using a GR-20 pedal to create the sounds of other instruments and it had me wondering if anyone makes a pedal, rack unit or a software device that can do this for drums.

Most of our drummers like that "ping" sound that the snare drum makes but it really gives me a headache on the recording side of things. Most times I can put a vibration ring on the drum or EQ the channel in order to tune it out but I was thinking that it would be nice if I could insert something into the channel that gives the snare more of a marching snare sound.. that mellow quiet "bbbrrrrratta tat tat" where you hear more of the actual snares than you do the drum itself. Or perhaps if I want to make it sound more like a rock snare, this would be a neat device to have.

Does the Gr-20 or any other device do this?

I just put mic on the bottom of the snare and mix it in with the top...

Ted, are you multi-tracking?
There are many software tools for this, and I know there are hardware VST-Plug-In boxes that do it "real time." How close to real, real time I'm not sure as I've not used them.

I thought you were looking for something like this from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

We use Roland V-drums which allows us to tweak the sound in a lot of ways. I wonder if you could somehow run the mic signal from an acoustic set through the Roland brain.

Nope. Not multi-tracking but recording on the fly.. although multi tracking isn't a bad idea. But a VST box sounds like a good idea. Can you name or recommend a few that I should try out?

That's right.. but even though this issue can be corrected several different ways, I can't get any cooperation from the band. And nobody else seems to be bothered by what I am getting on the recording so making them keep the mics where I put them is a very tough sell.
