How to Make Fuzzy & Irregular Borders in GIMP?

For images that don't occupy the whole screen, it would be nice if they weren't all rectangles. It would also be nice if they didn't all have sharp borders.

How do you use GIMP to edit images to have different shapes?

How do you use GIMP to edit images to have "fuzzy" borders?

Lane

Find another image of something that has an interesting border.
Put it on a layer above my photo.
Cut out the inside to reveal my photo.
Resize my photo as necessary.

I'm not sure I follow. You can create a mask.
Set your foreground to white and background to black.
Start your project with correct template to match your native resolution
of your projectors such as 1024 x 768.

Swap your colors. (double arrow thingy) so black is foreground / white background.
Select the ellipse tool.
Move cursor to upper left corner and left click and drag to lower right hand corner.
Make sure Feather edges is check marked. Adjust the radius slider to above 60.
Press the delete key.
You will get a nice soft edge in shape of ellipse.

You can use the image you just made as a mask or use it as a background.
Click on Colors. Then click Color to Alpha. White is the default so when you
click on OK you will get a nice soft opening to place your image behind on a
lower layer.

I use the free select tool (looks like a lasso) to make irregular shapes. Check the feather edges box (I use a value of 10, but you can choose whatever looks right), and draw a shape around the image. Then invert the selection (usually Ctrl+i, but it might be different on yours), and delete the excess.

I usually put the image on a separate layer so I only work on it, not the background, too.
