Basically its just video you have of people/places/events related to what your video is about and/or background stuf that you use for cut-aways, etc.

For example when I did an interview of the head of our Kids programs, I pulled up a little B-Roll of the kids playing or doing lessons in the kids area and cut to that. Much more interesting than 240 sec of a talking head.

The Avid video editing comapny put of a PDF of some video editing terms. It the document, in defines B-roll, as well as many other video terms. The PDF can be found here .

When I was going to school, the instructors always defined it as video used to enhance the telling of a story. Kerwin defined B-roll well. Another example is in a newscast. You see the anchor talking, then video of let's say, sports highlights. The video of the sports highlights is B-roll. Hope this helps.
