SDI stands for Serial Digital Interface, an industry-standard method for carrying digital video along with up to 16 channels of digital audio over a single thin coax cable up to 300' and terminated with locking BNC connectors. Since SDI supports SD as well as HD video, one could run cabling for an existing standard definition video feed, then upgrade to high-definition in the future and not have to run a new cable.

SDI mini-converters are generally around $300 each. To simply convert an existing VGA run, you would need one converter to convert from VGA to SDI on one end, then you'd need a second converter to convert the SDI signal back to VGA on the other end. But if you're only sending computer output to your projector, you can find display cards that output SDI for less money, which could eliminate the need for the first converter.

Thanks everyone!

Our Church went through a very long period before finally executing our change from VGA to DVI this weekend-that included 2 method changes from Gefen originally to Black Box then finally and very oddly to Monoprice 8121's. The product link is:

YOU'LL HAVE TO LOOK UP! I HAVEN'T MADE 15 POSTS YET-SORRY!

Over a pair of 90' CAT6 cables, these unpowered units actually worked! As the pigtails on these units are HDMI, I used an equally inexpensive Monoprice HDMI to DVI adapter to the projector (that only had DVI as a possible digital port). I wanted to thank everyone who responded in this thread for the ideas and feedback that lead to the initial proposal reviewed in our Church's months-ago leadership meet. The tech changes had come in successive periods from another of our members who is responsible for our sound and works in the entertainment industry.
