Bash New Bulb or Overheating Prob

We have an Acer XD 1280D DLP Projector. Works very nice. Have had it for around 4 years. Haven't had to do anything to it. This past Sunday night we went to use it and it stayed on for around 20 mins then shut off. I waited then powered it back on and it stayed on for 5 mins then shut off again. We only use it when missionaries or special speakers come in or a special event, so it doesn't get used every Sunday. There was nothing blocking the vents. We put it on a cart and use it in front of the church. So is it the bulb or overheating issue?

Normally if the projector is overheating there would be something else to tell you this rather than just shutting off. There should be a section in the user's manual about what indications you should get for various failures (the section is probably headed troubleshooting or something like that). Compare the symptoms that you can see with the table or text for a match (if possible). For example, on our Hitachi projector the LED lamps on the front panel flash in a certain colour and sequence if the filter needs changing, or the lamp is overheating etc.

I have just downloaded the user manual and this projector appears to have a similar display feature to our Hitachi. It is on page 35 of the English manual I downloaded headed "Problem: LED lighting message". The front panel of the projector should have a power, temp and lamp LED. The power LED can light up red or blue. The LEDs can be on, off, slow flashing or fast flashing in various combinations to represent each fault.

I never noticed those 2 lights at the top of the project before. I have had it plugged in for 45 to 50 mins and it is still running. I know Sunday night I had the computer sitting by the projector so that would have made it hotter. We have always had them sitting that way for the last 3 to 4 years.

Does that mean the LEDs have not come on when you observed your fault? Normally, blinking and flashing lights draw your attention - especially if you don't know they are there!

One other possibility is that the power is dipping to the projector. Have you checked the power cable? Is it plugged into an intermittently faulty power outlet or multi-way adapter?

Just trying to think of a few more issues I have come across before for you to check.

Have you checked the filter? 4 years is a long time to go without cleaning the filter.

It's a budget DLP projector, though. More than likely it doesn't use a filter.

However, a quick blow with some compressed air (WHEN COOL, NOT HOT) should help.

We just burned out a second projector (DLP) - we get this ultra fine dust from the ceiling (almost like talcum powder) and no matter how often you clean the thing it still goes all through the projector and messes it up.
We're moving in a few months so we tried to get it to last (it didn't) but have now put a shield around it to maybe keep the dust down.
IF it's getting dust (even sitting) it can mess it up so where it is kept when not in use may be an issue. Also - DLP's seem to be much more sensitive to this problem then LCD's. A good cleaning may help.
