General Metaphors What is metaphor? How do you develop metaphors? Can you help me find a metaphor for this topic? Had a successful worship experience incorporating metaphor and want to share? This is the forum to discuss these and other metaphor related ideas.

Deliverance

We're going to be going a 4-5 week series on Spiritual deliverance this summer. I made the mistake of joking about going with a western theme and getting some Deliverance movie posters.

Jason and Len teach that some metaphors cannot be redeemed and I'm pretty sure this is one of them.

However, our pastor has grabbed onto this and is looking for someone in the congregation that can play banjo.

I need a better idea that I can sell him on. I really don't want anyone watching "Deliverance" because that's what the preacher is preaching on.

So, any ideas out there? I don't think "The Exorcist" is the way to go, either, for the same reasons.

The more I think about it, the more I'm thinking about some sort of Light vs. Dark.

Maybe I could get some old Mad Magazine Spy vs. Spy cartoons. (ok, maybe not)

What about the idea of a delivery, like when a mother delivers a child? The child is going from a confined dark space into a bright open world, where everything is new. Or to jump om the MO band wagon, "Fresh out of the Box"?

Interesting take. Makes you really think about the term. I normally think of the deliverance being the demon exorcized.

But the person being deliverd from darkness into light is a good way of looking at it.

Here' what I've come up with:

We'll be changing the second part of the title each week to match the message.

What do you think? I'm thinking of adding some glow around the door and the light spilling in.

That sounds like a good way to go. Maybe outline darkness in white too.
Tough concept I think you have a good handle on it though.

Maybe a red glow around darkness? Although that would be the only color. I'll have to play with that.

I like this because the simplicity is a departure from what I've been doing lately.

We were considering opening the door a bit each week. But I don't think that would get the bang for the time invested that would be worth it.

You could try and add the silhouette of someone in the door way. Maybe something like this:

I was considering that, but wasn't sure how to pull it off.

Maybe I'll add it later in the series, as appropriate.

Thanks.
