General Metaphors What is metaphor? How do you develop metaphors? Can you help me find a metaphor for this topic? Had a successful worship experience incorporating metaphor and want to share? This is the forum to discuss these and other metaphor related ideas.

Unforgiveness

I need an idea for a main graphic and background graphic on forgiveness. The scripture is Matt 18:21-35. The sermon is mostly on the impact on us when we don't forgive others.

Joel,

Nothing jumps out immediately except maybe subtly working in some math (the 70x7 thing).

Do you have a sermon title yet? That may help inspire something. Meanwhile, I'll think on it and see what develops.

The only title I have so far is Rocky, pt. 6. He does mention Peter as Rocky once in the sermon.

His titles generally have little to do with the sermon, anyway. It might be mentioned once in passing about midway through the sermon.

Sometimes, I get the Worship Pastor mention the sermon title when he introduced the Sr. Pastor, so that the title slide makes some sense. Otherwise, you'll go halfway through the sermon before you have any idea why those words are up there.

But I like the mathmatical idea. I'll have to noodle on that some.

Maybe 490 numbered dots, with some crossed off? not quite, but getting there.

I emailed you my thoughts, but thought I might add something here too. I don't know how closely he stuck to the topic with the actual sermon, but the theme is listed as "it's easy to lose focus on what you're called to accomplish." If losing focus is being talked about as the result of unforgiveness, couldn't we focus the graphic more on the idea of losing focus. I think it's going to be very difficult to come up with a good representation from the unforgiveness angle, but there are several things that come to mind from the losing focus angle. Having someone trying to look at or get to something that's blocked from them by an obstacle or mountain. Having a scene that is very out of focus/blurry. Covering/losing something important/precious amidst something unimportant/petty. That's kind of the direction I was thinking, but I haven't seen the hard copy of the sermon either, I've only seen the theme.

Yes. The pastor seems to have wandered from the theme outline he sent at the beginning of the sermon.

I thought I had sent a copy of the sermon. Sorry about that.

I think I have rectified that situation.

Just to close this loop, we inserted a MOTS video on forgiveness in the service. So I grabbed colors and font and basic style from that, and made an abstract background for the graphic set.

For the 70x7 passage, I made 3 slides. One with 7 sevens, one with 77 sevens and one with 490 (70x7) sevens (14 rows of 35).

I also found a picture of Satan in a doorway, looking like he was blocking you in. I used a scratchy font and put "UNFORGIVEN" on the back of the door and used that a couple of times, as appropriate.

So it turned out O.K.
