How useful is making a Facebook page for Church?

I work with the media team in my church and a member had suggested to me to make a Facebook page. I am wandering if anyone can tell me their experience with making one and how successful it was.

Our small <300 member church has a FB group page as an extension of the prayer chain. FB made some changes a month or so ago, and I'm not sure if it made it through the changes.
I guess you need to determine what it's purpose is going to be, what it will be used for, how you will allow access to it etc.

I think it could be a benefit, if it's going to be active, e.g. events, pictures, encourage comments.

But if you're just going to put up your service times and statement of beliefs, I don't think it will get much play.

For a school system, or building, it is recommended that 1 person be the administrator of the page and spend a minimum of 10 minutes a day updating/editing/monitoring.

I think it can be useful, but I think there needs to be planning. The page has to have a purpose, and you have to be intentional about how you do things on it. Otherwise - it will either be a mess and have no focus, or it will not be used.

Facebook Pages are a great idea! But only if you can keep them updated. You do not want anything to be static. Facebook (and Twitter) need to be updated with fresh content.

My church uses an app called Squareberry to update its social media pages. It does the updating automatically - which makes it easy for there to always be fresh content. If you really want to use social media with your ministry, I would say getting an application to help you out is a good idea (makes it all easier and more organized.)
