WOW I have one on my desk I was going to pay. Did not pay much attention to it. Yesterday got a renewal from the service I have been using. Glad I waited.
Thanks

I'm very surprised these "companies" haven't been charged with fraud.

The reason they don't get charged with fraud is buried in the *very* fine print. If you read carefully you will find that "this is not an invoice". Because it is an "offer" they can get away with pretty much anything they want. I've seen virtually the same thing for phone services and for yellow pages ads. What they all have in common is that they are pitched to look like an invoice.

If I can convince the secretary over at Sanctus Software that I've been doing business with your company for YEARS and that Mr. Hayward would be highly upset if she didn't accept a $5000 order, then as long as I deliver what I promised, I did nothing wrong. Even if it's for 8-pack of crayons.

Tip:

Know who your Hosting is provided by, and who they registered your domain through.

For instance....

My Career consulting business I do hosting at WebHostingPad

and my domains:
http://www.Jolapa.com is through enom.com
http://www.JobLaunchPad.com is through Godaddy.com

Know who you pay, and what you pay them for.

Yep, I get those frequently, along with "this is not a bill" invoices for yellow pages advertising. I think the premise is that a lot of companies just pay something that looks like an invoice, and it's mass marketing in an attempt to nab business from inattentive customers.

Years ago, AT&T sent me three checks, and the fine print on the back of the check said that by endorsing the check I was agreeing that they could become the long distance carrier for the phone line listed on the check (there was one check for each of my three lines).

I got my "bill" today from the DOMAIN RENEWAL GROUP. I've gotten them before, so it wasn't a surprise. Fortunately, my wife and I review each other's bills, before we pay them.

It irks me that they use the whois info for their marketing campaigns. bill

Reminds me of a few weeks ago when I got a renewal notice in the mail from Pop Sci Magazine. I thought "Oh, my subscription must be up, let me renew." So I went online to renew (instead of using the mail form) and found that my subscription didn't expire for another 6 months! This was just a way of getting people to give them money now, not later.

Moral of my story (and this thread): always check before you send people money!

But that wasn't necessarily a scam as much as it was despiration. Some of my subscription based services have been billing me early too. They say, "I know you don't owe us until February but we just figured that you wanted to get your next payment out of the way."

Yeah I get Those Too

Yeah. I keep getting those also. The first time it through me off guard. Definitely something everyone needs to be aware of.

I recommend having all your domains from one registrar, that way you only need to pay attention to things from that company.

It's probably a good idea to go into your domain configuration and select the option to hide your contact info.
