Training We are a relatively new church and are starting out pretty slow with lighting. We have no one that has experience with stage lighting. As the closest thing to a technical director we have the ball sort of fell in my court. My experience is mainly with graphic design, video, and some audio. The building we are leasing is owned by a retailer that sells medium to high end residential lighting. The owner donated a "package" with our lease. We are thrilled to have it but want to add to it. Currently we have fluorescent general lighting used only for building cleaning, practices, etc. During our services we have several incandescent 80W cans that we keep dimmed. On stage we have cans above and 8 par64s mounted in front four with colored red/blue/yellow gels and the two white ones for the center where the WL and pastor stand. We really need more because some of the band members are basically in the shadows on the stage. All of the lights except the fluorescents are tied into DMX dimmers and controlled by an Elation Scene Setter-48 controller. We do want to someday add intelligent fixtures and whatever it takes to have a good light show without looking cheesy. Everything I know about lighting I've learned in the past 4 months. And that's not much. I feel like we aren't utilizing or equipment to it's potential and would really like to improve in that area. Now for my questions. 1. What training resources are out there to train a novice in the basics of stage lighting? 2. What are the best "bang for your buck" additions to what we have in place? We are taking it slowly as budgeting allows. By the way, we did have a well meaning anonymous church member recently donate a brand new fog machine and a DJ Aggressor. I'm sure this will be cool looking but I don't know if that's what we are looking for.

I too have been muddling through for about 6m in our church's new auditoium as the only lighting person. I have reached the end of being able to "play with it and figure is out". We have some set up problems that need to be addressed also. -

I am looking for information on the proper settings for 4 lighting trusses of 5 lights each hanging over the house to light the stage, steps and podium. the stage itself have another 4 trusses w/ 5 lits each. Where would you recommend I go for that kind of information? Plus additional training on an ETC Express light board. any recommendations would be helpful. Thanks!

I recently came across some free lighting podcasts that you can check out. They will be posting one very soon on Lighting Design 101 Do a search for Creative Stage Lighting Podcasts and you should get it. They are all free and FYI, I have nothing to do with Creative Stage but they are a good company.
